Incidentally, I bet most modern red-blooded Souths would have bid 1spade at their first turn. This would have led to North leaping to game at this form of scoring.

Looking at the East hand, it strikes me that it is a classic type for returning a diamond at trick two as before, but playing low when the spadeJ is led from dummy at trick five. It is South's fear of this distribution on which East must play.
