Why Did I Not See This 22 Years Ago

My correspondent felt that 4NT might be for the minors so he bid 5club, but North put an end to the uncertainty by leaping to 6heart. It would be extremely interesting to know what North had in mind, for finding whether his partner had spadeA would not have exactly helped matters. On the other hand, if he meant 4NT for the minors, what could he have heard from partner to make him do something other than jump to 6heart? Perhaps it was just an elaborate ruse to stop East-West sacrificing profitably in 6spade. South very wisely resisted the temptation to "catch up" - North would not have anticipated such wasted values as spadeA.

How do you play on the suspiciously singleton-like lead of club8?
