If the clubs are 4-3 then only two ruffs will be required in dummy to establish the suit. If, however, the clubs are 5-2 then all three of North's club losers must be ruffed in dummy, so you can afford to cash only one high trump. If West is still able to overruff dummy on the third round of clubs then the contract was never makeable.

Cashing one high trump is one thing, cashing none is quite another, and West duly overruffed dummy on the third round of clubs because declarer had omitted to take out a little insurance. Not only that ..
