This is a good hand, and many players would be tempted to force with an unwise 3club. The spade suit is still a possible trump suit and any fit could get lost in the murk of 1diamond-3club-3diamond-3spade. 3spade in this sequence would likely be an advance cue-bid agreeing diamonds.

By bidding 2club followed by a natural 2spade, East allows his partner to show good spade support - a suit West might not have bid over 2club when lacking the strength for a reverse.

All hypothetical stuff, because as you can see, West had hearts and not spades. The Scots reached a good slam, so how would have played it? South plays spadeJ on dummy's ace.
