The spectre of defeat was too much to contemplate for the PM - his party might win enough seats to form the next government but that would be scant consolation if he lost his own, only to be cast into the wilderness and labelled yesterday's man. His performance in the match so far had been, to say the least, lack lustre, so he must pull off something special to convince the voters. The final set began poorly for the PM and continued in that vein. On board 19 he found the only lead to let through 3. On board 22 he opened a vulnerable 1NT holding AKxxx of hearts and played there to find that his partner held QJxx. Six tricks were the limit of the hand in NT but nine were easy in hearts.
