South had been outfoxed by West's clever psyche! South did duly double and the contract went merely three off, minus 500, for a wonderful result against the cold 6heart.

What do you think about psyches? Are you serially economical with the truth or do you deprecate their use whatever the situation? Most of us are capable of treating third-in-hand-at-green opening bids of 1spade with a degree of suspicion - so what's the point of bothering with psyches in such circumstances! No, they must remain a weapon in the armoury of all bridge players but are best deployed when they are least expected - like the one above.
