Senior's highly tuned table presence had warned him that West's pause was indicative of an unfavourable heart position. That being so, he backed his judgement to the hilt by converting to 7NT - and how right he was! The play was a formality - when East showed a singleton heart there was no possibility of playing West for clubJxxx - and that gave North thirteen top tricks. In the other room North-South discovered their spade fit and played in 5spade, giving Senior's team a huge swing. In the end his team ran out winners by 940 points.
