In Bridge, it's vital to listen carefully to the bidding when there is a possibility of playing even a small role in the later proceedings of the play. In today's deal declarer heard the bidding . but he wasn't listening.

To be fair, declarer told this story against himself after it cropped up in a National Rubber Bridge contest, so it's hard to be too critical.
