Huggett soon found the best answer by ruffing the opening lead and leading heartQ from dummy to retain control. If South ducked declarer would simply switch to diamonds immediately, and if he won with heartK at trick two declarer could safely ruff the club return high, draw trumps and establish the diamonds. Declarer made ten tricks for +790.

What happened in the other room? North cashed the first nine tricks on the diamond lead for +600. This was a terrible result for East-West and one of the main reasons why they lost the final in a close match.

The par result was 5club doubled making ten tricks - North has enough time to establish heartK to take care of a loser.
