East decided that for his 3NT bid South must have a spade control, good hearts and another minor suit honour. He reasoned that if that that honour was clubK singleton then because of the 3-1 club break declarer could be cut off from dummy as long as West had diamondQ. On that basis East switched to diamond4 hoping that diamondA entry would be knocked out before the clubs could be unravelled.
