If you returned a major suit you make a second trick, but on a minor suit continuation you're a dead duck. A club switch gives declarer a free finesse for three spade discards, and on a diamond lead South can organise to ruff all dummy's diamonds in hand and yet run dummy's remaining trumps to squeeze you in the black suits.

Lawrence returned a trump at trick two - which was guaranteed to beat the contract unless declarer's spades were as good as spadeAQJ(x). He realised that there was no great panic to do anything clever - just let declarer do all his own hard work. Commonsense.
