The difficulty with opening 2 (or its 2 equivalent with weak twos) is that if partner responds 3 then your first suit is mentioned at the three level. That cramps the bidding significantly and leaves plenty of scope for misinterpretation if either partner goes on past 3NT. At the table North opened a very conservative 1 and followed with an equally restrained 2. Presumably this was forcing, or possibly 3 would have been a fragment bid showing a club fit and three diamonds, but in the end they reached 6 without any problems.
