The Germans were playing canape opening bids, whereby their second bid suit is the longer, so 1heart showed at least three hearts. 1NT was a relay of 10+ points and asked for further classification of South's hand. When the answer was 2club, showing 10-12 with five clubs, North thought that would be as good a spot as any and passed.
