Several Souths took the view that there were good reasons for playing this contract in hearts.
1) Hearts scores better than clubs.
2) The diamond tenace would be protected.
3) They would be playing the contract and not North!

In addition, as Dick correctly pointed out, North is very unlikely to have solid clubs else why hasn't he opened 3NT - but just how good are his clubs? When Kirchoff and Paulissen were North and South respectively South decided that they would be good enough and bid 6. News of that result later, but we'll assume that you bid 6 along with many of the other Souths.
