A quick look at the hand will tell you that you will have had several chances to defeat this contract. Either you play low at trick one, or you win spadeA and continue the suit. Declarer's clever psychological ploy of playing like a man holding spadeK worked perfectly at the table, for East won spadeA and switched to ace and another diamond. That was the end of the defence and 4heart made for plus 620.

Actually, a third opportunity was available after cashing diamondA. If partner encouraged, then it would be OK to continue diamonds - otherwise switch back to spades. Partner should be able to work out what declarer was scheming, and give you a ruff
