At the table declarer quickly cashed three rounds of spades to ditch a losing club, heaved a mental sigh of relief when that passed off peacefully, and led a trump. Unfortunately that was not good enough - even though the trumps were two-two. West was Patrick Jourdain, prolific writer, Welsh International and no mean player. Realising that declarer would not be in such a hurry to discard clubs if he held the clubK, he led a small club to his partner. The spade return enabled the defence to take three trumps tricks.
