As you can see, a diamond lead would have made the contract easy. diamondA is cashed, the trumps are drawn and a club played from dummy. Although East can lead spades once dummy wins and plays another club. East now has to continue clubs establishing clubJ in the process, or concede a ruff and discard.

Declarer was Rozanne Pollack of the USA. After this friendly opening spade lead, she drew three rounds of trumps and led a club from dummy. East was Sabine Auken and she won the first club with the queen, cashed clubK and exited with diamond5. Declarer knew that West was almost certainly 6-6 in / (no clubs, 1 heart, no diamond bid), and had to make the critical decision now. This was the end position.
