These type of near-opening-bid hands are best described with a cue-bid of the opponents suit. Simple overcalls have a very wide potential range, so you don't know if partner has a "good" 1diamond or a "bad" one. The way to find out is to ask him! A cue-bid of 2club asks partner to describe his hand, whereby he will quietly bid 2diamond with a weak overcall or make some other constructive noise with a better one. Of course if West bids again then partner's silence will say it all.

At the table our South made an unscientific leap to 4diamond. When West supported hearts, North decided that this must mean a sacrifice would be less costly. In one way he was right, but he misread the major suit positions and went three off for -500.

16/03/2026: I would expect a double from South for his second bid would find some support today.
