It's still not altogether clear is it? In 4spade there is a distinct likelihood of a singleton club lead to East's ace, a club ruff, followed by a diamond to the ace and another club ruff. n'est-ce pas? North envisaged a scenario in the alternative No Trump game where there would be five running spade tricks, a couple of clubs and a few red suit winners. Look what happened.
