Smolski went to work: he took another spade finesse before leading a low diamond to dummy's queen. Although it might have been right on some occasions to unblock with diamondJ, this was not one of them, and it proved to be terminally fatal when East did just that. Another spade finesse was followed by a heart to the jack, and dummy's last club was ruffed with spadeA.

During this process West had been strip-squeezed to come down to heartK8diamondK9, so Smolski now played ace and another heart to end-play West, who had to lead into diamondA10. East could only make spadeK. N-S + 620

This gained 11 IMPs when 2club went two off at the other table.
