Roman Triumph

Roman Smolski was one of the enduring images of the British bridge scene in the seventies and eighties. With his Deep Purplesque long hair and bandito moustache he was an unmistakeable sight. At the table, nobody knew what cards he had, and sometimes I swear he was bidding "blind", but boy could he play the cards!

Roman led a somewhat nocturnal existence and I remember well when Tony Sowter was selling his large house in Nottingham, every time I went round there Roman was fast asleep on the floor of some vital room while the guided tours were conducted around him.

Today's deal finds him in the 1981 Common Market Championships, playing a gossamer thin game contract.
