Different Class

The only time that I ever played with a world champion was back in the 1980s, when Sally Horton, as she was then, was the lady concerned. Several of us had been to a "bridge wedding" in Nottingham and were intending to have a fun evening of bridge at the local club in the evening. We'd all drunk too much and the joker amonst us, Graham Marshall, had arranged for my wife Denise, a non-bridge player, to play with Sally! Sally was up for it, but Denise had partially sobered up and chickened out. So I ending up partnering Sally and Graham played with Denise, who spent most of the evening looking at the awful ginger toupees worn by two men, instead of her cards. Graham's verdict was that Denise had played better in the first half while she was still drunk.

As well as being a world class player, Sally is now a distinguished journalist - the bridge correspondent for the Sundaty Times. However, the hand for which I shall always remember Sally is one that I have no doubt she will have totally forgotten.
