In true Monty Python Communist quiz style I have to tell you that was in fact a trick question! West shouldn't win the spadeK! At the table declarer's spadeQ held and he followed with a spade to the nine. Winning with the ten, East switched to heart3 which West won to revert to clubs. Declarer could not afford to duck, lest he cut himself off from dummy, so he rose with clubK and cashed spadeA. There was no happy news there, so declarer tried a heart which was won by East who proceeded to cash two clubs. All that was left for East to do was exit with a heart and wait for his diamondK. East-West +200.

West's duck was a sound ploy, for South would not start with spadeQ10x (and no 4spade bid) and was very likely to go wrong.
