On the basis that she was being offered a free finesse and therefore it was right to refuse it, declarer went up with the ace. Cue groans from East-West.

So it was destined to be that East-West suffered the frustration of seeing declarer butcher the play and yet still make the contract. Worst was to come, for amazingly this was the only pair out of four to bid the slam.
