The old rule about bidding one more when unsure would certainly have paid off here. At the table both Norths did bid 4spade to confirm my friend's judgment, but the sequences diverged when it came back to West's turn. The Irish West doubled and 4spade made for -790. The English West bid 5heart which was also doubled and made for +650. This meant a huge swing of 16 IMPs to England.
