Goldman realised that a successful club finesse would bring twelve tricks, but after considering East's advertised diamond length he felt that West would be more likely to hold the clubs.

Adopting a reverse-dummy approach, declarer played three rounds of clubs, ruffing high in hand. heartJ was overtaken in dummy for the last club to be ruffed high. After cashing spadeA, East was known to be either 1-2-6-4 or 2-1-6-4. The odds heavily favoured West to hold heart8 and Goldman led his last trump - the two - and finessed heart7 in dummy! The remaining trumps were drawn and all that remained was to lead diamond5 towards South's queen. N-S +1430. Mr. Goldman obviously only finesses in the 50% of the time ... When they work!
