Next week I begin taking a bridge class for the first time for several years. Sometimes the idea which you are trying to impart somehow doesn't hit home, and I am reminded of this lovely anecdote from a friend who was teaching beginners at the time. Declarer had a side suit of A10xx opposite KJx, and she led small to the jack, which won, and small back to the ten, which did not. When asked to justify her play she said, "Yes, these finesses do work 50% of the time."

Of course, the finesse will be one of the first card-play concepts to teach and in today's deal, Bobby Goldman of the USA tried a finesse.
