At the other table, another undisciplined East overcalled 2club and found himself in dire danger of losing 800 - as happened at table 1. South led his diamond as before but when North won with the queen, East dropped a routine false-card diamondJ. This was enough to persuade North to switch to spade10. Declarer played three rounds of hearts, ruffing in hand, cashed the remaining spades ending in dummy and led the fourth heart. There was nothing the defence could do now to prevent declarer making two further tricks. South's remaining trump length forced him to ruff his partner's winners and lead repeatedly into East's clubQ108.

It's alright using these modern conventions, but old fashioned sound defence will still be required! The good news is that this East will bid 2club again on this sort of rubbish. I will be there, waiting.
