At the table, I could not imagine that partner might want to come in at the vulnerability and assumed that his double was for penalties. I was wrong, and rightly so. In the olden days, before decent bidding had been invented, this type of double would be for penalties and I've just found a 1980 Bridge Magazine where Reese says so, but even by then he was almost a lone voice.

These days his double of 2diamond shows a hand unwilling to make an original double of 1diamond for fear of a hearing an embarrassing response opposite. In this sequence it would typically show a 4-2-2-5 shape. Anyway, RHO didn't see partner's double - but she did see mine! We'll draw a veil over the play, but suffice it to say we racked up +500.
