I had to smile when I received an e-mail from a friend - let's call him Jim. It reminded me of an unfortunate incident many years ago when I had booked to play in the same event with two people .. and I forgot to turn up! They had the pleasure of playing with each other.

Jim's transgression was only minor in that he had turned up a week early to play with me, and found he had to hurry back to another venue 12 miles away to play in the event in which he was supposed to be featuring. Jim arrived 30 minutes late, but he need not have worried because after 12 boards his team were 10 IMPs up. Jim was playing with an occasional partner, we'll call him X, and this happened all in the next five boards. I'll use Jim's words.
