Stretton wondered why East had not pre-empted originally. After all, he must have six or probably seven hearts to bid at the three level with no support from partner and advertised heart strength on his right. Also, his bidding must be justified by the inclusion of diamondK. Accordingly, Stretton led a diamond to the ace and was surprised to see the king drop.

Reassessing, declarer reasoned that East had not pre-empted because he must hold a side suit of spades, so at trick three he ran the spade9. When that held he crossed to hand with clubA, drew trumps and strip-squeezed West in the process. Declarer crossed to diamondQ and exited with diamond6. West was left with only clubJ73 and was forced to lead into declarer's major tenace. N-S +1430
