To give himself the best chance of success against two of the finest players in the world, Meckstroth thought the unthinkable. He played low at trick one! Winning with diamondQ, East (Helness) returned another diamond thinking that partner might have started with diamondKJ4. Meckstroth discarded heart3, won diamondA in the dummy and led a heart towards hand. What could East do? If he won heartA his partner's king would drop on the next round, so he played low allowing West to win. A rapid spade came back, but it was all too late.

Declarer won spadeA and led the heartJ. East's ace was ruffed, and declarer drew two rounds of trumps ending in dummy before discarding his spade loser on heart10.
