Sally Horton (now Brock) realised that it could be important to win an early spade if the clubs only yielded four tricks. With this in mind, she led a spade to her queen at trick two. West won and cleared the diamonds, which appeared to be 5-3. Horton crossed to spadeK and finessed club10 successfully, but when she cashed clubA West showed out.
