Kathy Wei is an American and an ex-world champion. Consider her problem. Her partner opened 2spade, weak, and North doubles for take-out. She decides to jump directly to 4spade, optimistically hoping to end the auction, but South bids 5club.

Partner has six spades, South will probably have six clubs for her bid, so North-South have at least nine, probably ten trumps. This means there are (6+4) + (6+4) = 20 tricks available. This means it is only wrong to bid if both sides can make precisely 10 tricks. On general principles, when unsure it is wise to bid one more.

What is your bid?
