You can see why South was worried about rebidding 1NT or 2NT - the less than robust spades but such good diamond support. Qx is not necessarily a bad holding in No Trumps, and with this strength hand I would say that it is better just to close your eyes and rebid No Trumps at the level consistent with your system. If partner is strong enough to go on, then you retain the option to show diamond support, and if not, partner might turn up with spadeJ9xx anyway. If partner has only spadeJx spades, maybe the oppo have a spade partial.

Exchange South's spadeQ for a small card, at pairs scoring you would still opt for 1NT over partner's 1diamond, but if partner had responded 1heart, perhaps South would be better advised to quietly raise 1heart to 2heart.
