He raised to 4heart!! If this hand was entered in a "Bidding Challenge" contest, 4heart would probably not be a universal choice of the bidding cognoscenti. Indeed, the verdict might well be nil points. North had assumed that South must have at least five hearts and raised to three on the basis of his ruffing value. Quite why South did not try 3spade on the way through, or offer an alternative of 3NT, we will never know. Perhaps North ought to have tried 2NT. Maybe 3club - but what would that have meant?

The upshot was that the final contract surpassed East's wildest dreams as 4heart was three off. Who needs escape mechanisms?!
