At the table West decided to continue with a diamond due to the lack of an attractive alternative. Declarer thought something funny was going on and rose with the ace, but to his horror East ruffed this and led another spade. Once again spadeA did not appear, so West won spadeK and cashed diamondK10 on which East ditched two spades. East was duly rewarded with a spade ruff and when the smoke had cleared, South emerged with only six tricks.

Many years ago, the legend that was Terence Reese wrote a regular column called "Play These Hands with Me". Reese, who would probably turn in his grave watching South's performance, would have christened this "Misplay This Hand with Me."
