Life is easier when we know exactly what the opponents have. You lead a heart to your ten, on which West throws a small spade, and cash heartA on which he throws a diamond. Crossing to dummy with spadeQ, you exit with diamond8 to end-play West who has to lead a spade into the jaws of spadeA10. Ten tricks and plus 630.

West's opening bid was highly sporting, but these aggressive bids are part and parcel of our game these days, so it's not surprising that they occasionally prove to be very helpful to the opposition.
