When we are young players (in my case a long, long time ago) playing at congresses we often come up against established super stars about whom we know absolutely nothing - least of all their identity. My regular partner at university, Ian Jane, recently reminded me of an incident 30 years ago about which I still have absolutely no recollection. Apparently we were sat down to play against the late, great Rixi Markus who was, how do they put it, a larger than life character who was not averse to letting her feelings "shine through". Ian related that I made 4 when the majority of the field had gone down on probably a better line. This was not well received at all well, and Rixi made her displeasure abundantly apparent.
