When West returns the spade, you should take care to protect yourself against a four-one trump break. If you ruff the spade and play a trump to dummy's king, there is no easy way back to hand and so West will obtain a trump promotion if he started with four trumps. To protect yourself against this you must discard a club on the third spade, to allow yourself easy access to hand with a club ruff.
