Having passed initially and yet bid his diamonds, North eventually came to the conclusion that South's 4NT was merely looking for a safe haven, in the same way that he might have bid 3NT in a 1-2

-3NT sequence. This being the case, and having "bid his hand once", North felt it would be prudent to pass at this relatively modest level.
