South could see that there were two possible trumps losers, although it was unlikely that West would hold KQJspade or he would have led one. Even if there were two losers in trumps, because the defence had failed to find the diamond lead, South could see that it might be possible to discard his diamond loser on dummy's hearts.

With this plan in mind, and in order to maintain easy communications, he played a low heart from dummy at trick two. West won and switched to a diamond, but it was too late.
