After a fairly normal auction (it was replicated at the other tables), South found himself trying to make 1NT doubled. West found the best lead of a spade on which East played the king.

In order to guard against a five-three or even six-two spade break, declarer made the standard safety play of allowing this to hold. To win the first trick would risk allowing East a late entry to West's (hypothetical) spade winners. The next trick was won by dummy's spadeQ. First major decision coming up - what do you do now?
