West had bid very strongly despite holding a modest point count. Declarer concluded that he therefore must have been quite distributional and, because of his leap to 4heart, probably had singleton trump. Declarer therefore abandoned trumps and cashed diamonds until East ruffed on the third round to leave the three card ending as shown.

What could East do? To play a trump would allow declarer to draw trumps and claim, and to play a heart would let spade10 take care of declarer's last diamond. North-South plus 620.
