Well, was it 5heart, 6heart or 7heart? North felt that it was almost certain that East would be supporting spades whatever the level, so he decided to bide his time with 5heart. There have been historical examples of players where, using this hand as an example, North had bid 7heart as a gigantic bluff. It would take a far-seeing West to have led spadeA, but here the most likely result of a 7heart bid by North would have been a 7spade bid from East. The boot would then be on the other foot and North would have to lead diamondA to defeat it.
