Double dummy analyser: makeable contracts
West North East South
Pass Pass 4spade
Pass Pass Pass
When our second hand originated , South made East-West's life a misery by opening 4spade, and once again West chickened out. Any modern Wests who bid a hair-raisng 4NT (two places to play) would achieve a good result, but any West who doubles would have to defend competently to defeat the contract, if East decides, understandably, to Pass.

Having won the heart switch at trick two, the best line for declarer would be to lead a small club from dummy at trick two. East will know his partner has the clubA, and if he decides to be a hero by rising with the king to lead a trump, he will be sorry. Declarer wins, plays another club which is won by West, but whatever the defenders do now South can ruff a club in dummy and finesse in trumps to land his game.
