What North did was quite simple - he passed. He had unannounced seven card support for partner's suit, he had aces in two side suits and a void in the other. But he passed.

Barring outrageous breaks, 6 is absolutely cold on a non spade lead. Knowing South as I do, and he is a close friend, I would say that North is lucky to be alive. Come to think of it, I haven't seen North recently.
