After considering the various alternatives, he emerged with 1NT. So what, you might say...... well what North was actually dealt the hand shown on this page, not the previous one. He wouldn't be the first player ever to open 1NT with a void and no doubt he won't be the last, although to open 1NT with this particular hand is perhaps slightly off centre. North had sorted his cards into a 3-4-3-3 hand, but what he really had was a 3-0-7-3 shape. The four small hearts held between the black suits were actually diamonds.
