Understandably, partner had dropped the heart2 on my opening lead, but declarer gave us a reprieve, by unaccountably playing a small spade from hand to the spadeQ. Winning with the Ace, partner still had a dilemma, and finally decided to play Ace and another heart - a play only wrong if declarer has an undisclosed five card diamond suit. The end result was minus 750.

One other point: imagine partner does win the heartA at trick one and switches to a low club. If declarer rises immediately with Ace, then it is imperative to unblock with the King, something I would have found difficult even with both brain cells activated, let alone on the first board of the season!
